What is Mediation?
The role of the family mediator is to assist separating couples, grandparents, stepparents and other family members reach practical, fair arrangements for child arrangements and/or financial settlements. You will utilise various interpersonal skills such as excellent communication, motivational interviewing, be empathic and patient. Confidentiality and the ability to be open and transparent with clients is essential. Being a mediator is a challenging yet highly rewarding and enjoyable job.
The Doorway to Becoming a Mediator
One Day Introduction to Mediation
This course is designed to give prospective mediators the opportunity to gain an insight into the principles and process of mediation. The day will involve group discussion, presentations, role play and a short assessment. It will touch on the background of mediation, the key elements in assessing the suitability of mediation, how mediation works and what skills you will need to develop to achieve the necessary qualification. You will also have the opportunity for a Q&A session with an experienced, trained accredited mediator on the day.
This course will then give you the entry to the next stage of your chosen career in mediation.

Who is it for?
This one-day insight into family mediation is open to anyone who feels that mediation (the use of impartial negotiation skills), may be useful in their current career and/or those wishing to embark on a career in family mediation.
Integrum Foundation Family Mediation Training
Course Structure
The course consists of 80- 90 learning hours, with at least 60 of these being classroom based.
The classroom-based learning will be held over three consecutive months. These will normally run from 9:00am until 6:00pm with breaks for lunch (provided) and refreshments (provided). You will be required to complete assessments based on your class learning and from role play taken from real-life mediation scenarios.
You will also be required to undertake distance learning and research (usually 20-30 hours). This will consist of relevant mediation and related articles, assessments based on your learning and full explanation (with examples), of what you would be expected to submit in your portfolio when applying for full accreditation (FMA).
By the end of the course, you will be able to independently produce the range of documents used in mediation among which are a mediation session summary, a parenting plan or outcome statement, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and an open financial statement (OFS).
Before, during and after your course, you will be provided with the opportunity to shadow real mediation practice and you will be given an insight into the requirements for applying for full FMA accreditation. This will be in the guise of a module on portfolio completion.

Your next steps
You will then be required to join the Family Meditation Council (FMC), information can be found here – https://www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk/mediator-area/standards-codes-guidance/fmc-accreditation-faqs/.
You will also be required to become a member of one of FMC’s member organisations (MO). Mediator member organisations play a crucial role in supporting and representing mediators, and membership of a mediator organisation that is a member of the FMC is a requirement for all registered mediators, (FMC.)
The FMC has five Member Organisations which you must be affiliated with. These currently are:
• College of Mediators
• The Law Society
• Family Mediators Association (FMA)
• National Family Mediation (NFM)
• Resolution
Who is it for?
Applicant entry attributes:
You will need to demonstrate that you are able to work and practise at a level of understanding, which demonstrates a level of knowledge of a subject which goes beyond what was taught during secondary education. This can be evidenced by your previous work and experience and/or by completion of a degree or equivalent qualification.
Please note- You must have attended the Integrum One-day introduction to mediation before commencing this training.
Professional Practice Consultancy
What is a Professional Practice Consultant (PPC)?
‘Professional Practice Consultant (PPC)’ means a person who has contracted with a mediator to provide professional practice consultancy (ongoing support). This will be someone who is registered as the mediator’s PPC on the FMC Register.
Your PPC’s role is to support you as their consultee in connection with your mediation practice, including processes and documentation, and in your ongoing professional development. They must hold a current PPC qualification (issued by the FMC), and have complied with the current FMC standards.
Once you have completed your Integrum Family Mediation training you will be required to meet with your PPC for a post training review and observation in at least one mediation session. (This can be provided by one of Integrum’s partner services). In addition to this you must have at least ten hours one-to-one support from your PPC . This is also known as supervision.
This may all seem a little daunting, but the role of a mediator is rewarding, and you will be fully supported in your new chosen career. We look forward to working with you.

Terms and Conditions
1. Fees and payment terms
Fees include all pre course materials, direct delivery of the course, assessments by the trainers, all training materials and the services of your designated learning mentor during the course.
Refreshments will be provided during the day including lunch. Dietary requirements must be identified by the participant at the time of booking. Integrum or its partners cannot be held responsible should you fail to do this.
Any accommodation and travel costs are not the responsibility of Integrum. Information on local hotels, and assistance in sourcing suitable accommodation, can be provided by our administration team without prejudice.
Full payment for all training is due four weeks before the start of the course or the date of the first module, (unless you are using the instalment method- see below). Where this is not received, your place on the course may be withdrawn, although it may be possible to join a later course.
Instalment method- Our instalment payment method is available over four monthly payments. There will be an administration cost of £45. This must be paid at the time of booking, together with your deposit. Payment of your deposit plus the administration charge must be received, and your instalment agreement accepted, before you will receive confirmation of your place on the course. You may pay the outstanding instalments consecutively, one month after the date of the preceding payments. In exceptional circumstances, the instalment method may be extended as long as all modules are completed within eighteen months of completion of the first module.
2. Cancellation or date changes
Integrum reserve the right to cancel or re-schedule the training course, due to lack of numbers or unavoidable circumstance. If participants cannot be accommodated on an alternative course, a full refund will be given. Integrum cannot be held responsible for any extra costs incurred as a result of a cancelled or re-scheduled course.
If you cancel your booking four weeks or more prior to the start date, Integrum will refund the full course fees less an administration fee of £150 for foundation training and £45 for other modular courses. If you cancel your booking between two and four weeks prior to the start date, a 50% refund will be given. Two weeks or less prior to the start of the course or failure to attend will result in loss of full payment.
Participant substitutions can be made up to three days prior to the start of the course with an administration charge of £45.
Rescheduling your booking to a later course will result in an administration fee of £45.
3. Reasonable adjustment
Integrum will do everything they can to make reasonable adjustments to the course in order to meet the requirements of our participants. Integrum will provide a full assessment of learner needs before and during the course. Participants need to make their requirements clear before booking and wait for confirmation that these needs can be met. The assessment process will require taking part in role plays and other tasks in order to ascertain the level of skill reached.
4. Copyright
The copyright and all other intellectual property rights in all course materials remain the sole and exclusive property of Integrum. In participating in the course, you undertake that you will not copy or permit the photocopying of course materials, nor disclose or permit the disclosure or sell or hire the same to third parties, nor use the same for running your own courses unless agreed in advance and in writing by Integrum.
5. Qualification
Participants should note that successful completion of Integrum family mediation courses requires participants to demonstrate an understanding of the underlying principles, and competence of the skills required for mediation.
Trainers use assessment documents which specifically identify these competence standards and you will be graded against them. You will be shown these assessment documents on the course as you progress. Whilst every effort is made to support your learning and in supporting you to achieve your qualification, we cannot guarantee that every participant attending will achieve the qualification.
6. Indemnity
All information provided by Integrum is given in good faith and Integrum will not be held responsible for actions taken by the participant, or any other individual or organisation as a result of the information provided during the training course.
7. Queries
If you have any questions or queries regarding these terms and conditions, you must put these in writing to Integrum prior to enrolling on the course. Your place will not be assured until the answers to any queries have been clarified in writing by Integrum.
