Family Mediation Training Courses

Integrum offer courses to provide a path to a new career on family mediation.

Our Family Mediation Foundation Training consists of two parts.

Foundation Part One – A one day introduction to family mediation.

This course is designed to allow candidates to have an insight into the route to becoming a Family Mediator. You will gain an understanding of what skills set is required and how these can be developed during the full Family Mediation Foundation Training.

Part One costs £150 per candidate (refunded against the cost of Part two of the foundation course)

Foundation Part Two – The Family Mediation Foundation Training Course. This course builds on from the one day introduction to family mediation and takes candidates on the second stage to their new career.  The course runs over a three month period and is broken down into four modules.

  • Module 1 – 3 Days of classroom, tutor lead and group interactive learning
  • Module 2 – 3 Days of classroom, tutor lead and group interactive learning
  • Module 3 – 2 Days of classroom, tutor lead and skills practice

In between each module, distance learning is required.

The  one day introduction to family mediation course must have been attended prior to commencing this course.

The cost for this course is £2250.

CPD Training Courses:

Navigating the Family Court Application Process

Who is this course for?

Mediators, professionals, litigants in person; or anyone who is involved with or wishes to have an insight into the court application process.

Aims – this one day course aims to provide participants with an insight into making a child arrangements order and /or other available orders to the family court; and what to expect during the process from attending your MIAM to navigating the paperwork and stages through to the to the hearing date and beyond including an intro to court supported ‘Separated Parents Programme (SPIP).’

Objectives– by the end of this module you will be able to:
Complete and/ or support applicants without a solicitor and representing themselves to complete a child arrangements court application including the different funding available.  Have a clear understanding of the process including the CAFCASS safeguarding process. Have a clear insight into the different CAFCASS or Local Authority involvements that may be introduced – in terms of allegations of harm and/ or domestic abuse; and to understand the various presenting issues you may be faced with.

On completion of the course, there will be the opportunity to link with other services in order to support the process such as McKenzie Friends and other such agencies and support networks.

Course 1

MIAMS – Getting it right

Who is this course for?

Newly qualified/trainee mediators wishing to update their skills and have a more specific insight into the Mediation Information and assessment session (MIAMS) . Qualified Mediators wishing to update and refresh their skills; particularly in publicly funded mediation (Legal Aid). This course is awaiting College of Mediators CPD approval.

Aims – This two-day course (can be taken separately), Day one- aims to provide participants with the foundation principles in theory and practice of safe and appropriate assessment for mediation and next steps. This course will also provide participants with the understanding of the competency requirements for conducting a MIAMS.

Day two will concentrate on publicly funded mediation and the correct assessment of eligibility.  For those competent in conducting the Mediation Information and Assessment meetings however; are not confident in assessing eligibility for public funding, day two would be ideal.

Objectives– by the end of this module you will be able to:

Conduct an initial meeting.   Understand who can and who cannot conduct MIAMS, and to understand the various presenting issues you may be faced with. You will be able to correctly assess for publicly funded work (legal aid).

Course content

Day One (Part One)

  • Provides the overall objective of initial (intake) meeting with individual clients in order to allow them to make an informed choice.
  • What is a MIAMs and an Initial Meeting? Differences between initial, meetings- routes and a mediation session.
  • Principles limitations and benefits of mediation.
  • Correct classification of mediation.
  • How are mediation sessions conducted? – the various methods.
  • Who can conduct them?
  • Safety- assessment and planning – Including screening for domestic abuse, safeguarding and capacity to engage.
  • Expressing the importance of clients individually obtaining legal advice.
  • Skills practice/ case studies.
  • Next steps.

Day Two (Part Two)

  • Means testing- Getting it right for Legal Aid. Assessing client’s eligibility to public funding.
  • All other work allowed under public funding for mediation.
  • Court forms – information on the court forms that can be signed by the mediator.
  • Skills practice/ case studies.
  • Next steps.

Course Fees: £150 per day or £250 for both days which includes lunch and refreshments.

Course 2

Safeguarding- What to look for. What to ask. 

Who is this course for?

Mediators and professionals working with families wishing to update their skills in recognising  the signs of abuse.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, regardless of your job role or how frequently you work with children and/or their families. This Introduction to Safeguarding Children course aims to help you understand more about your responsibilities as a mediator and professional, in order for you to feel confident in recognising the potential signs of abuse; and report any concerns that you may have.

This course looks at all the essential aspects of child protection to help you to identify any safeguarding issues raised by clients and to report any disclosures. We will look at when to consult your PPC and/or to report information given.

Course content

  • Introduction to safeguarding
  • What is abuse/neglect? – recognising the signs
  • Responding to a disclosure
  • Recording a disclosure
  • To mediate or not

There will be a follow-on course for those responsible for writing safeguarding policies and procedures.
